Hello and always a warm hearted welcome to you,
I appreciate your being here, part of this always expanding community;
I have been thinking of dry July....and how this can change your life ( including those around you)
. This is a great initiative that was not around in my parents lifetime...yet as a kid, booze "infected" our home everyday.
MAREES MOTIVATIONAL WEEKLY WORD:
SOBER or OWNER ;means saying no to toxic influences beit alcohol or drugs.. but it also means living with responsibility, and personal well-being. The joy of being in control of your thoughts and actions, and making conscious choices. It's about swapping out an unhealthy habit for a healthy, liberating one.
Years ago there was a series called the Dean Martin Show- no I'm not that old, yet yes I do remember a Dean Martin figure in black and white to some degree.
In it he was depicted as a drunk who was always going to booze fuelled parties. He was part of what was commonly known as the Rat Pack... because they were always up to no good.
Alongside his greasy half drunken smile he held his glass of scotch whiskey and cigarette in his hand.
His name became famous for Martinis too...
This swayed many male viewers into the false belief that in order to have a good time you needed to be drunk or close, womanazing, andd being a you guessed it "Ratbag"
The after 5 drinks or the 6 oclock swirl, was the norm, with an expected home to dinner that the "little wife" had cooked while raising children and warming His slippers by a fire.
Some may be remembering this in bliss mode, while others are thinking " heck no". This is an indication of how far we/you have progressed.
Whatever your response;
Dean was also known for this phrase- His running joke was " Did I have a good time, - did I enjoy it??
Because that's exactly what happened to those who drank all too much all too often.
I know like many of you nodding your heads, my father was a heavy drinker too.
In dry July I often wonder what Dad would have been like as a sober man?
Or what all the drinkers out there would not have missed if they hadn't been passed out on the couch, or at the pub, or a mates place getting plastered,or hung over the next day, or ill all week, or coming down and extra unkind, or less broke, or abusive?
I knew that my father was exposed to hideous sights... those parts of war experiences are incomprehensible-and that the need to drink or numb away was present.. And I'm thankful that now we understand that there are better ways to process the mind.
MAREES WEEKLY QUOTE;
Give dry July a try....
What will you miss? Nothing of value.
What will you gain ? Oh everything....and more.(Maree McManaway)
What will a good time look like where we are fully present?- not blazed, drunk or wasted. Not hooked on devices, or cop outs..but actually having a happy sober connective time, a time that is deeply enjoyed.?
With proud feelings that fills your soul and forms smiles that reach one's heart and show on your face ...What will that feel like?
What would this be like to remember fun gatherings in detail?
What will you miss? Nothing of value.
What will you gain ? Oh everything....and more.
Walking with you all the way.
